Ghost Movies: STIR OF ECHOES and THE CHANGELING
Tuesday Oct 17, 2023
Tuesday Oct 17, 2023
We're back with another spooky season episode for you and another pair of great ghost movies to talk about! Going in reverse chronological order this time, we're starting off with a movie that came out in a banger year for movies - 1999 - and this one is no exception. We're talking STIR OF ECHOES, and all the things that make it a fantastic little gem of a ghost movie. Based on a novel by Richard Matheson, and written and directed for the screen by David Koepp, it's got all the talent behind and in front of the camera and we have a great time dissecting why it all works so well. Then we get into a stone cold classic of the ghost genre with 1980's THE CHANGELING starring George C. Scott. This one gives us not only everything we could want from a ghost/haunted house tale, but also a very deep and emotional look at grief in the main character's story. We've got one more spooky episode left for you before the month ends so keep an eye out for that, and we hope you've enjoyed everything we've put out so far! Happy Halloween!

Haunted House Movies: THE INNOCENTS and THE ORPHANAGE
Monday Sep 25, 2023
Monday Sep 25, 2023
It's officially spooky season at Movies for Life and we are both READY FOR IT! Both of our favorite subgenre of horror is ghosts so that is what we are doing the whole month here on the pod - with a couple bonus episodes in there for you too! But first we take a look at a couple of haunted house movies, starting with Jack Clayton's THE INNOCENTS from 1961. Iconic haunted house imagery that still works like gangbusters aside, this story is made so much more compelling with its unreliable main characters and the fact that by the end, you're still just not really sure what all has transpired here. Then we talk about a movie that is equally as compelling, the Guillermo del Toro produced and J.A. Bayona directed THE ORPHANAGE from 2007. Is this fairy tale-laden story sad, tragic, bittersweet, or all of these rolled into one at the same time? We had an amazing time talking all horror for the first time in a while on this show and we hope you enjoy this episode and all the other spooky content we have in store for you this month!

High School Reunions: ROMY & MICHELE’S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION and THE WORLD’S END
Tuesday Sep 12, 2023
Tuesday Sep 12, 2023
In the second part of our little series all about high school movies, we're taking things a bit into the future with a look at some films about high school reunions. With all the memories and expectations about how our lives should be, this is arguably a more stressful and confusing experience than high school itself, and both of these films capture all of that so well. First we get into Michele's choice and her movie namesake, ROMY & MICHELE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION from 1997. It's quirky, it's fun, it's colorful and oh-so 90s, but it still has some pretty profound things to say about life. Then we get into Brian's movie pick from 2013, THE WORLD'S END. The most mature and sometimes most dark film from Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's Cornetto Trilogy, THE WORLD'S END may be about aliens with blue ink inside them on the surface, but underneath it is so much more. We hope you enjoy this episode!

School's back in session so we're celebrating with a look at a couple of high school movies! First we talk about Brian's pick, which is a movie that not only loves movies, but also explores the beautiful intimacy of a close friendship, and the unimaginable struggle of going through cancer - ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL from 2015. Then it's on to Michele's choices, a hilarious comedy with a surprisingly dark side all about rumors, reputations, and double standards - it's EASY A from 2010!

Kidventure: THE GOONIES and HEAVYWEIGHTS
Tuesday Aug 01, 2023
Tuesday Aug 01, 2023
What would summer be without a little adventure! And sometimes it's even more fun when it's a "kidventure", so we're going back to our childhoods with this episode on a couple of our favorite kid-led adventure stories. The first one we talk about is probably the quintessential movie in this category - Brian's pick is Richard Donner's THE GOONIES from 1985. You know it, you probably love it, and it was most likely a staple of your childhood, too! We try to pinpoint just why this one still works for us after all these years, whether it be personal connections or just those little moments in the film that really make it special. Then Michele introduces Brian to a favorite from her childhood, 1995's HEAVYWEIGHTS! A throwback to the irreverent movies and TV shows for kids from the 90s, this is one that has really only gotten better over the years because of the important message at its core. Plus, it has one of Ben Stiller's best performances ever, AND a great dance sequence from Paul Fieg, so what's not to love?! Happy listening - and please don't put Twinkies on your pizza.

Horror of 2023 So Far
Tuesday Jul 18, 2023
Tuesday Jul 18, 2023
In this episode we discuss every horror movie of 2023 that we've seen so far and discuss what we've thought of them. It's a lively conversation that gets into the highs and lows of this year's horror films (between January and the end of June) with a few hot takes along the way. But please remember that it's all in good fun, and hey, maybe our opinions could change if we watch the films again! As the both of us are really horror kids at heart, we actually haven't talked about THAT much horror on the show thus far so this conversation was a lot of fun for us and we hope you enjoy listening to it!

Animals Attack: ARACHNOPHOBIA and JAWS
Monday Jul 03, 2023
Monday Jul 03, 2023
(Note: this episode was recorded a few weeks before it was confirmed that Julian Sands had passed away. RIP)
We have some summer fun for this week's episode of Movies for Life where we're talking about a couple of animal attack movies! First, we get into a 90s thrill-omedy that brilliantly walks the line of being legit traumatizing and hilariously fun at the same time - ARACHNOPHOBIA! We have a great time discussing just what makes this film still effective after all these years, the moments that creep us out the most, and the best sidekick character ever, Delbert McLintock. Then we celebrate the 4th of July with the classic film most associated with the holiday, the practically-perfect-in-every-way JAWS! Though we know we can't really say anything about JAWS that hasn't been said before, we do our best by going through some of our favorite scenes and moments with the characters, and even some new thoughts and feelings we had this time around. We hope you all enjoy listening!
